Our Whole Lives

Our Whole Lives is a series of sexuality education curricula for five age groups: grades K-1, grades 4-6, grades 7-9, grades 10-12, and adults. Our Whole Lives helps participants make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health and behavior. It equips participants with accurate, age-appropriate information in six subject areas: human development, relationships, personal skills, sexual behavior, sexual health, and society and culture. Grounded in a holistic view of sexuality, Our Whole Lives not only provides facts about anatomy and human development, it also helps participants to clarify their values, build interpersonal skills, and understand the spiritual, emotional, and social aspects of sexuality. The constant in OUUC’s sexuality education program has been the grades 7-9 program. In recent years this has been offered every two or three years (2002/2003, 2005/2006, and 2007/2008 are most recent three classes). The curriculum for grades 7-9 consists of 26 1-1/2 hour classes. Classes are held on Sundays with one overnight, multi-session gathering held. This OWL curriculum not only provides important sexuality education, it also provides an opportunity for developing strong friendships and a sense of community at a challenging time in many of our youths’ lives.

In recent years, OUUC has expanded its OWL offerings to include both the grades K-1 and 4-6 programs. Since 2004 the K-1 program has been held twice and the 4-6 program once, and another 4-6 session is planned for the spring of 2008. The curricula for these programs consist of eight weekly one-hour sessions held on Sunday mornings, usually during second service.

OWL facilitators are volunteers who have received formal training in the curricula at UUA-sponsored training workshops. Currently OUUC has trained facilitators for the K-1, 4-5, 7-9 and adult programs.
